If you are a service staff, you do not sell cars or clothing, or jewlry or anything concrete, your potential customer can touch or inspect or take a test drive. Instead, you sell the ultimate intellectual, yourself and your knowledge.
And yet your potential customers still want something they can "test drive" before buying your services. Therefore, information products are so important to anyone who sells their own services. These materials prove your knowledge and skills. They are visible and convincing to anyone interested in what you can offer them.
Here are some easy ways to create your own information products:
- Start with lace sheets. These can be as short as one page and as long as a whole book. Organize your knowledge in a numeric or bullet point format and continue adding your list every day. In a week or two, you can easily have hundreds of tips that would be useful to your potential customers.
- Tape every general speaking opportunity. Go out there and find small groups that may be interested in your topic. Do not ask for a fee, but ask permission to record what you say. Chances are that a speech is not enough, there will be background noise and other factors. But after you have recorded three numbers, you can edit them to a single CD that you can give to the clients.
- Write a blog. Your blog will not be the information product itself, it will be where you create your information products. A few months after I started my own blog I saw that I had organized my skills and written so much material that I practically had several information products that were already writers. It is now my own little machine to produce all the information products I ever need. Already, I have outlined two complete books that are only based on my blog posts.
- Rework and re-material you have already produced to create new products. My blog posts have become magazine articles and an ebook. The new products are not just rehashed material, I only use the first format as a springboard to help me create something new based on what I have already written.
- Outline a Course You can easily find opportunities to learn classes at local adult education sites or online in the form of an eCourse. Your sketch should suffice for the first class, but you want to create more material for your students as you go. Every handout you write, every syllabus, every worksheet and every workbook can all be used as information products for your potential customers.
- Perform recorded phone interviews with experts in your area. Have several prepared questions and talk points that you give in advance to your interviewee. After the call has been recorded, you can distribute the CD as an information product.
- Compile FAQs. Over time, your customers will ask you many of the same questions. Write these down and then write the answers. You can post these common questions on your site or they may be separate information products. When you produce your information products, be aware of what the audience wants to know and need to know. Things you take for granted can be very insightful for your reader.
As Michael Port, author of Book yourself Solid, points out, "a product turns into another and another: the possibilities are endless." Nothing will build your credibility faster than producing information that meets your potential customers' needs. Think of creating your information products as your fast track to success.
